Having a good quality modem is vital to your Internet connection - it is one of the most important factors in how fast you connect, your Internet performance, and how consistent & stable your connection to MCTxs is besides the quality of your phone line. Since many of our customers live in rural areas, a good quality modem can be the difference in connecting and not connecting at all. Below is a summary of modems that work well with MCTxs' service & particular modems that have proven to be less compatible with our system. Universal modem connection information and drivers guide can be found here. Manufacturer specific modem information and strings are available here
MCTxs connects hundreds of users to the Internet every day and we compile data from our customers' experiences. It is through these experiences and our research that the following observations were made.
We have found the best results with the following hardware (controller) based modems. These modems handle all the signal processing on board and requires no additional software except the Win95/98/NT device driver for the make/model of modem you have purchased. This driver is supplied on disk or CD by the modem manufacturer and provided with each modem. We recommend the following specifically by brand or model number (where available) if you are purchasing a new modem or computer system:
Be sure about the modem included in computer systems that you are shopping for - MOST manufacturers (for example, Dell, Acer, Gateway, IBM, CTX, HP, & Compaq to name a few) include a software based modem (commonly called winmodems and are "controllerless" modems) instead of a hardware based modem that provides greater compatibility with our system as mentioned above.

Below are several modems that we have found to be less compatible with our system and may result in poor connections - to clarify this point, some of these modems WILL connect to MCTxs under optimal conditions with little difficulty, but have many major difficulties connecting if your line quality is poor or questionable (which can easily happen in rural areas).
